Open atelier! Zondag 30 mei en zondag 6 juni staat de deur van mijn atelier open van 13:00-17:00. Je kunt dan zien hoe de wandkleden van Shadow of a Doubt en de vloerkleden van Trom Plui gemaakt worden.

Een leuke combi met de groepsexpositie in Gallery Untitled en een bezoekje aan het groene zonnige tuinterras van De Kok en de Tuinman. Koningsveldestraat 14, Rotterdam. Je bent van harte welkom.

Shadow of a Doubt maakt onderdeel uit van de groepsexpositie ‘Koningsveldestraat 14’ in @gallery_untitled! The vier handgeweven wandkleden worden voor het eerst getoond in de echte wereld. De tentoonstelling ibegint vandaag en eindigt 6 Juni. Je kunt de expo bezoeken op vrij-, zater- en zondagen. De opening is op zondag 23 mei tussen 11:00 en 17:00 (stuur een mailtje aan info@untitled2011.com met jouw gewenste bezoektijdstip).
Heb je plannen om te komen? Laat het me even weten. Misschien kunnen we elkaar ontmoeten en kun je ook mijn atelier bezoeken in hetzelfde pand.

Shadow of a Doubt is part of the groupexhibition ‘Koningsveldestraat 14’ in @gallery_untitled! The four handwoven wallhangings are on public display for the first time. The exhibition is from 21th of May till Sunday 6th of June. You can visit the exhibition on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The opening is on Sunday May 23rd between 11:00 and 17:00 (send an e-mail to info@untitled2011.com with your desired time of visit).

Op dit moment ben ik bezig met het definitieve kleurenpalet voor de Trom Plui vloerkleden. Het kleed op de foto is een ‘proefkleed’. Ik kreeg in een vorige post enthousiaste reacties op de kleuren. Ik denk dat de kleuren die ik ga presenteren het ontwerp nog beter naar voren laten komen. Maar ik zal ook ruimte laten voor klanten met kleurvoorkeuren die buiten het door mij voorgestelde palet vallen.

At the moment I am composing the colour palette for the Trom Plui rugs. The rug on the photo is a sample. It colour combo got me positive comments in a previous post. This made me realise that I should leave room for clients’ colour tastes without my suggested colours. However, I do think that the colours that I will present will match the designs perfectly.

A collection of bespoke handwoven rugs. Do you get why it is called Trom Plui? Speak it out aloud and you might hear ’Trompe l’oeil’, a trick of the eye . The graphic pattern of the rug gives an illusion of depth when viewed from a certain angle. I am so looking forward to weave these bespoke rugs, and see what design variations customers will come up with.

A collection of bespoke handwoven rugs. A maximum of twelve unique rugs will be made in 2021. A brochure with detailed information is in the making. And this week I am receiving the wonderful Swedish wool I am intending to use for the rugs. A great range of subdued colours will be available.

Final post: the finished rug. On Instagram the whole process took three weeks, in reality a couple of days. As I said before, I love every step of the process, but is always extremely exciting and satisfying to get to the final result.

De laatste post: het uiteindelijke vloerkleed. Op Instagram deed ik er drie weken over, in het echt was het een dag of drie. Zoals ik al eerder zei, ik houd van elke stap in het proces, maar het is altijd heel opwindend and bevredigend om het eindresultaat te zien.

The rug is off the loom. Now it is time to finish the rug to prevent it from unravelling. A row of Damascus knots secures the warp. After that the border is folded at the Soumak hinge. Fixed with some glue and handstitching. Et voila! Next post: the rug in full glory.

Het kleed is van het getouw af. Nu nog de afwerking zodat het kleed niet ontrafelt. Een rij van Damascusknopen zekert de schering. Daarna wordt de rand gevouwen om de Soumak. Vastgezet met wat lijm en een gestikte draad. Klaar is Kees! Volgende post: het vloerkleed in volle glorie.

With a rug the loose ends are darned in while the cloth is on the loom. This chore conveniently gives breaks to the routine of weaving. And it is satisfying to see the loose ends disappear showing the pattern of the rug in its full glory. The romantic bird scissors I inherited from my mother. Not my style, but it is nice to feel her company this way.
As you can see at the top of the picture, I am nearing the end of the rug.

Bij het weven van een vloerkleed worden de eindjes afgewerkt terwijl het kleed op het getouw is gespannen. Een prettige afwisseling met de routine van het weven. En het geeft voldoening om de losse eindjes te zien verdwijnen en het patroon van het kleed in volle glorie te zien. Het romantische vogelschaartje erfde ik van mijn moeder. Het is niet mijn stijl, maar het is fijn om zo haar aanwezigheid te voelen.
Zoals je bovenin de foto ziet: de zoom van kleed is in beeld. Het kleed is bijna af.

weaving a rug (post 11)

In a series of posts I invite you to join me in the process of weaving a rug.

The routine of weaving. Orange and purple alternate, and together fill a pick of the rug. After each throw of the shuttle I change treadles. I make sure there is enough slack in the yarn to make nice even bubbles of yarn on the surface. When weaving with double threads, special care is given to the way the yarn passes at the selvedge.
This video is real time. I avoid the temptation of timelapse clips, even though I know the magic of seeing slow processes develop quickly. However, in weaving, the magic is in other things, such as the wonder of structures and patterns emerging by crossing threads and making this happen on the loom. It takes the time that it takes, and I guess there is good in that.

De routine van het weven. Oranje en paars wisselen af en vullen samen een rij in het vloerkleed. Na iedere doorgang van de schuit wissel ik van pedalen. De draad wordt losjes in de schering gelegd, zodat er mooi en regelmatig relief komt in het oppervlak. Bij het weven met dubbele draden moet ik extra opletten dat de draden mooi naast elkaar om de zoom heen gaan.
De video is normale snelheid. Ik weersta de verleiding om timelapse filmpjes te plaatsen. Hoewel ik weet hoe magisch het is om langzame dingen versneld te zien gebeuren. Bij weven zit de magie in andere zaken, zoals het wonder hoe structuren en patronen ontstaan door simpelweg draden te laten kruisen op het getouw. En dat proces heeft gewoon tijd nodig, en daar zit denk ik iets goeds in.

Weaving has started. Two shuttles take turns for the weft. The technique is four end block weave. Solid blocks of colour make for a robust patterns. The possibilities for the pattern are influenced by the number of shafts and treadles.
Do you see the optical effect, a pattern of bars with shaded sides? It helps to take a little distance.

Het weven is begonnen. Twee schuiten met wol wisselen elkaar af voor de inslag. De techniek heet ‘four end block weave’. Effen kleurvlakken maken een robuust grafisch patroon. De mogelijkheden in het ontwerp worden bepaald door het aantal schachten en trappers.
Zie je het optisch effect, een grid van balken met beschaduwde zijkanten? Het helpt als je een beetje afstand neemt.

Finally weaving. First I weave a heading that will not be part of the rug. The heading provides a firm basis to make a good start with the rug. The stripes of purple and orange on the picture form the rug finish. Between the stripes is a row of Soumak. This will serve as a hinge, the purple stripe will be folded backward when finishing the rug.

In een serie berichten nodig ik je uit me te volgen bij het weven van een vloerkleed. Eindelijk weven! Eerst weef ik een aanzet die niet deel is van het kleed, maar een stevige basis vormt. De stroken paars en oranje worden onderdeel van de afwerking. Tussen de stroken is een Soumak draad. Dit vormt bij de afwerking een scharnier, waarlangs de paarse strook naar achteren wordt gevouwen.

Wool is used for the weft, giving colour and volume to the rug. And assuring a good tactile experience. The rugwool is supplied on large cones (located just ouside the picture). I need to rewind these into cakes in order to wind then two threads together on a ski shuttle for the weaving. Let the weaving begin!

In a series of posts I invite you to join me in the process of weaving a rug.

I don’t want to go into too much detail here, but the finals steps of dressing the loom involve connecting the shafts via a system of lamms to the treadles. Mine is a countermarch loom. With each treadle push all shafts move vertically, some downward, some upward, creating a nice shed for the weft thread while weaving. Choices in the connections between shafts and treadles account for the plethora of possibilities for weave structures. They are kind of programmed this way. I need to crawl under the loom to get this system in place. Hope I stay supple into old age.

In een serie berichten nodig ik je uit me te volgen bij het weven van een vloerkleed.

Ik zal je niet met alle details vermoeien, maar in de laatste stappen van het inrichten van getouw worden de schachten via een systeem van schemels verbonden aan de trappers. Ik heb een contramars-getouw. Elke keer als een trapper wordt ingedrukt bewegen alle schachten, sommige omhoog, sommige omlaag. Hierdoor ontstaat een goede sprong voor de inslag. De keuzes in het verbinden van de schachten met de schemels en trappen maken een grote variatie aan weefpatronen mogelijk. Deze worden als het ware ingeprogrammeerd. Ik moet onder het getouw kruipen voor het inrichten. Hopelijk blijf ik nog lang lenig genoeg.

In a series of posts I invite you to join me in the process of weaving a rug. Being honest, I do not like the job of tying the warp to the front bar. All threads should get even tension with the knots and the bar should be aligned with the loom. Each bundle gets a single knot. The tension is checked and adjusted when necessary. A second knot secures it.

Alle draden moeten even strak geknoopt worden en de lat moet mooi uitgelijnd zijn. Eerst krijgt elke bundel een eerste knoop. Na controle van de spanning worden de knopen gezekerd met een tweede knoop.

weaving a rug (post 5)

In a series of posts I invite you to join me in the process of weaving a rug. After threading the heddles it is time to sley the reed. The warp threads pass through the dents of the reed. A weaver needs a collection of reeds, and this one has four dents per centimeter. Every other dent gets a thread for this rug. My olive wood sley hook is a cherished gift by woodworker and crafter Linda Molenaar from Illuminatemi.
The reed is later hung in the beater and this system makes sure the warp threads stay evenly distributed along the fabric during the weaving.

In een serie berichten nodig ik je uit me te volgen bij het weven van een vloerkleed. Nadat de draden door de hevels zijn getrokken gaan ze door de spleten van het riet. Een wever heeft een hele collectie rieten, en dit riet heeft vier spleten per centimeter. Elke tweede spleet krijgt een draad. Mijn olijfhouten rietmesje is een gekoesterd kadootje van Linda Molenaar van Illuminatemi.
Later wordt het riet in de slagboom gehangen. Dit systeem zorgt ervoor dat tijdens het weven de scheringdraden mooi gelijkmatig over het weefsel verdeeld blijven.

weaving a rug (post 4)

In a series of posts I invite you to join me in the process of weaving a rug. Each thread of the warp goes through the eye of a heddle. This heddle facilitates the warp thread to be moved upward or downward during the actual weaving. The weft wil then pass under a part of the threads, and over the others. The movement of the warp threads is done via a system of shafts. Each heddles hangs on one of the shafts, seven in this case. In een serie berichten nodig ik je uit me te volgen bij het weven van een vloerkleed. Elke draad van de schering gaat door het oog van een hevel. Hierdoor kan straks tijdens het weven de draad omhoog of omlaag bewogen worden. De inslag gaat dan onder sommige draden door en over sommige draden heen. De beweging van de scheringdraden tijdens het weven gebeurt via het systeem van schachten. Elke hevel hangt aan een van de schachten, zeven in dit geval. Welke hevel (en scheringdraad) is verbonden aan welke schacht bepaalt mede de mogelijkheden van het te weven patroon. Dit is van te voren zorgvuldig gepland.

weaving a rug (post 3)

In a series of posts I invite you to join me in the process of weaving a rug. An adventurous step is beaming the warp. The threads need to be wound around the warp beam with even tension. A hoist construction with counterweights should assure this. I always succeed, so I don’t really know the slight anxiety related to this phase. Weavers: what is your take on this part of the process?

De draden moeten met gelijke spanning om de scheringboom gewonden worden. Een takelconstructie met contragewichten helpt hierbij. Het lukt eigenlijk altijd, dus ik snap niet helemaal waarom ik dit een spannende stap vind. Wevers: hoe kijken jullie aan tegen deze stap van het proces?

weaving a rug (post 2)

In a series of posts I invite you to join me in the process of weaving a rug. The warp is put on the loom. Even spreading is guaranteed by the raddle with a slit per centimeter. With this rug, each slit takes two threads. (In comparison: The wall hangings of Shadow of a Doubt have fourteen threads per centimeter.)

In een serie berichten nodig ik je uit me te volgen bij het weven van een vloerkleed. De schering wordt op het getouw gelegd. De evenaar zorgt voor gelijkmatige spreiding, met een sleuf voor elke centimeter. Voor het vloerkleed komen er twee draden in elke sleuf. (Ter vergelijking: De wandkleden van Shadow of a Doubt hebben veertien draden per centimeter.)

weaving a rug (post 1)

In a series of posts I invite you to join me in the process of weaving a rug. Design work has been done, time for the execution. It starts with threads. For the warp I use strong European flax. First step is to measure the warp. By warping the threads around a warping mill I end up with bundles of organised threads of the same length. For the 1 meter wide rug I prepare three bundles of 72 threads.

In een serie berichten nodig ik je uit me te volgen bij het weven van een vloerkleed. Het ontwerp is gemaakt. Tijd voor de uitvoering. Het begint met draden. Voor de schering gebruik ik sterk Europees linnen. De eerste stap is het draaien van de schering. Ik wikkel de draden om de scheermolen, waarmee ik bundels krijgen van netjes geordende draden van dezelfde lengte. 72 draden verdeeld over drie bundels voor een 1 meter breed kleed.
